Dave Anderson | Leadership Training and Consultation
Based on this quote, I’ve been on teams that would have made General Patton crazy. You may have too. These are teams where people don’t speak up. Everyone is agreeable and all ideas are good – especially if the ideas came from the boss.
The results:
- Meetings are boring.
- Ideas are vanilla.
- Results are average.

Now it is official! The survey results are in. Why do you follow a leader? What makes a leader great? 630 responses to two questions we posted across multiple social media forums and other venues gave us the answer.
Before I tell you the answer. I am going to tell you what it is not. People do not follow someone because they have the best education, are the smartest or are the most qualified. The skills and compentencies that we get MBA’s for and spend millions of training dollars on only got 13% of the vote. Continue Reading…
“If you do this, then I will do that.” or “I’m going to do this.” Period. End of story.
One is the basic language in most contracts. One is the language of a covenant.
The problem with contracts is that if one party does not comply, then the other party is not obligated to comply either. A covenant is stronger than a contract and a better way to build a relationship – in business and in life. Continue Reading…
“I worked hard this year! I deserve a bigger bonus!” I heard this complaint almost annually in 15 years in various sales leadership positions. Sometimes it was a valid complaint. Most of the time it wasn’t.
I like people who are competitive and driven to win. In sales, I looked for those traits in everyone I hired. Unfortunately, I found that drive often gave people an unrealistic perception of what they deserved.
“You receive a salary for effort. You get a raise and/or bonuses for results.” Continue Reading…

In a nutshell: “Your character is who you are when no one is watching.” We can all justify our choices by saying others won’t get hurt. But we all know there can be collateral damage to others when a leader makes a poor, private choice.
However, I want to focus on the character implications of these private battles we face. The definition of character I use is: Character is our habitual way of operating. In other words, HOW I AM IS WHO I AM. Continue Reading…
What are my priorities for this year? What accounts and what goals should I focus my efforts on? The time is now to ask these questions. Do not wait until after the holidays.
I sat in many, many strategy sessions for individuals, small teams and large organizations. They can be a beat down or very productive and energizing.
Somewhere along the way I picked up a tool that helped me clear through the clutter of brainstorming sessions and simplified my action planning. Continue Reading…
Friends,
I need a favor. Please help my dad, General Jim Anderson and I write our leadership book. We want to better understand what each of you admires in a leader. It will take you less than 2 minutes to answer these questions below.
Maybe they are someone you know personally, or have read about, or seen in the movies – Who do you admire and what do you admire about them? We will present the data collected in the introduction of our book.
Thank you in advance in helping us write this book on leadership. We will continue to update you on our progress and any milestone dates in the publishing process.
Lead Well!
Dave
Thank goodness politicians are not the only examples we have for leadership. Rarely do their words match their actions. They may be great speakers, but who cares! Our words mean nothing unless our actions follow those words.
The actions of an introverted Leader of Character will lead a team to excellence before the eloquent words of hypocritical extrovert. Our actions create followers more than our words do. Continue Reading…
