Leadership is a blend of competence and character. BG (Retired) Jim Anderson, my father, taught me that. In 41 years in the Army, including two tours in Vietnam, he saw a lot of great leaders and a lot of leadership failures that formed his philosophy. I started this website with this post. I have learned […]
When meat is marinated, it is soaked in a marinade for an extended period of time. The marinade sauce penetrates into the meat and not only keeps the meat moist and edible when it is placed over a fire, but it also changes the flavor of the meat. That flavor is maintained during the cooking […]
I am one of those guys who does not always get to control the TV remote in my house. Because of this dynamic, my desire to watch Deadliest Catch or SportsCenter is put on hold so my wife can watch one of her cooking shows. One thing I often hear on these shows is to […]

Posts with the ‘Leadership’ tag Let’s clear something up. We are all called to lead! “But, I’m just not the leader type.” Some people say this because they misunderstand leadership. Posts with the ‘Coaching’ tag Some organizations do not have people ready to step into a vacant leadership position. The issue in most of these situations is not a lack of talent, but a lack of people development. And that is the leader’s job. If you’re people are not growing, you are probably not leading. […]
All leaders would love to have a low maintenance team (LMT). A LMT allows a leader to focus on the big things and avoid the day to day hassles that could and should be handled at lower levels. When a leader does that, the leader and the team are more engaged and burnout and turnover […]

The world is full of self-important, self-absorbed, and self-promoting people. I prefer humble people. They are truly a breath of fresh air when I meet them. Humility seems to be a virtue that is losing ground in today’s world. Humble people do not make for good TV. The media prefers to make the bold and […]

How are things going?” Laura: “It’s been a busy week Dave. I’ve been running non-stop since Monday.” I always want to surround […]
On August 4, 2017 General James Mattis, the United States’ Secretary of Defense sent the following memo to every member of the Department of Defense. Ethical behavior from our military’s leaders is expected by the public and by the military itself. General Mattis makes it clear how each officer, enlisted, and civilian personnel should behave […]
There was an upperclassman at West Point who I was sure was the worst leader I had ever met. Then I met a commander in the Army that jumped to the top of the list. But, it was not until I hit the corporate world that I met someone who, to this day, ranks at […]
There are a lot of people who do good things to benefit others. But, it is really special when someone exercises great Selflessness and does not look to be recognized for doing it. One cold night in New York City, Officer Deprimo did just that. Here is his story…. Great Selflessness On a cold […]
